HYALGAN®
HYALGAN® (HI-al-gan) is a non-surgical, injectable treatment used by physicians to help patients alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with Osteoarthritis in the knees, hips and shoulders. HYALGAN® was first launched in Italy in 1987 and became the first Hyaluronic acid based product in the world for the intra-articular treatment of Osteoarthritis. In 1997 HYALGAN® became the first intra-articular hyaluronic based product approved by the FDA and launched in the USA. In 2006 2.8 million units of HYALGAN® were sold in about 50 countries worldwide. HYALGAN® is now being distributed in over 80 countries worldwide.
HYALGAN® is composed of hyaluronic acid derived from rooster combs. When hyaluronic acid is combined in a specialized formulation it produces Hyaluronan. Hyaluronan is a natural substance found within the body which the body uses as it's own joint lubricant. When a patient is suffering from Osteoarthritis (OA), hyaluronan and cartilage inside the affected joint deteriorate causing "bone-on-bone" rubbing or grinding. The result may be stiffness, pain, and/or swelling of the affected joint.
Injections of HYALGAN® are designed to decrease these symptoms. Quite simply put, one could compare this treatment to a "lube job" in a car engine. You can imagine the damage done in an engine without lubrication and compare that visually to the damage incurred within the affected joint. HYALGAN® treatment may help provide additional cushioning necessary to regain normal joint function.
One of the greatest benefits of Hyalgan over most other similar arthritic injections on the market is that treatment can be customized. Every patient is different and the degree of OA can vary significantly so having a customizable injection schedule only makes sense. Our product is sold by the individual syringe and can be adminstered by your physician in a 3, 4, or 5 injection interval. Typically a course of treatment will be one injection a week for 3 weeks. Most of the other products on the market end there. If you buy a kit of 3 injections or a single injection treatment and you don't feel it's enough you have no other option for 6+ months until the next treatment cycle can begin. If you and your physician decide after the 3 Hyalgan® injections that you could benefit from another injection you can do so. You can do so for an additional 4th and even a 5th injection if necessary. The degree of OA you have, activity level and your response to treatment will all decide how you approach your treatment
